Like a high mountain or broad river to the intrepid explorer, alcohol sometimes seems larger than life to the committed drunk. It's a place to get away from it all, especially when the mind is clouded by thoughts of a lost love. So it's not surprising that we have a few songs using geological features as a metaphor for alcohol. Here are a couple of good ones:Moe Bandy - Barstool Mountain (buy album)Willie Nelson - Whiskey River (buy album)
You might enjoy this evening's selections with a bottle of Old Whiskey River Bourbon.
Can you think of any other drinking songs of this sort (i.e., sea, ocean, canyon, cliff)?

Merle Haggard's Beer Can Hill
Only thing I can come up is this bit of Beefheartiana:
"One night she started drinking
Down by the river
She tied up the river
And backed the ocean down"
And of course, one of the most common floating verses of American folk music
If the river was whiskey
And I was a duck...
Btw I have posted on River's Invitation one of my favorite drinking songs
Streams Of Whiskey by The Pogues.
Whiskeytown - "Drank Like a River" :)
Cheers!
PS. Thank you for a great blog.
As an "alt.country" fan (meaning 'bout anything they won't play on the radio) AND a booze enthusiast, I wanted to say... Great site, thanks for sharing!
Also, the Supersuckers do a pretty rollicking cover of Whiskey River!!
