Hey there folks! I've been holed up in my north woods cabin for the past couple of weeks cooking up the next move for STWOF (and sipping on some of that Wild Turkey liquor).
The answer is . . . podcasting!
Once I figure out how to operate all of the bells and whistles, I'll start sending out a monthly(?) podcast of STWOF-style music. Each edition will be accompanied by a blog post discussing the theme and the high points of the selected tunes. The first podcast will be called "Alt-Country Before Alt-Country Was Cool: 21 Essential Twang Albums of the 1970's."
It could take me a little while to get back to civilization, so hang in there!
And keep buying records.

UPDATE: A common criticism of the podcasting format is that you get stuck with a big wad of music when you really just want to cherry-pick one or two songs. Truth be told, that's one of the reasons I'm switching over to a podcast. I don't want this blog to be a free substitute for i-tunes. If you want a single track, listen to it on my podcast (I'll provide the times so you can easily find it), and then buy it! Actually pay money to an artist.
I realize that this change will probably make my blog less popular, but I really don't care. I'm doing this for fun, at my own expense. And I'm not going back to the old way. It's this or nothing. (Of course, if nobody listens then I guess I will care. So hopefully a few of you will stick around.)
Sorry, but I'm ornery today.

I can't wait.
Hmmm. Can't tell if I should be detecting some sarcasm there? :-)
The problem with a podcast is that you wind up with a single file containing a load of songs out of which you're only realy interested in one or two. Your current format's much better.
I'm not in the blogging business to give away free music. If you really want a single track, but it.
In fact, one of the reasons I am switching over to this format is because I don't want my blog to be a free substitute for i-tunes.
And who knows, maybe you'll stumble on to another track you like...
Dang typos! What that should say is "If you really want a single track, BUY it."
Will you be vocally announcing the tracks? I think you should go for full-on Hee-Haw style.
About the vocal part. I think I would like to try that at some point, but not at first. I'm not a DJ by training or natural ability, so it might be better with just the music at first.
Sounds good...I'll be checking it.
Paul,
Stick to your guns- you're 100% right about those bitching just want free tracks.
good luck i'll be listening.
I'm really looking forward to this as well. I've already discovered good music I wouldn't have otherwise heard from your blog. The podcast format should actually increase my chances of hearing something new (to me) and great.
I'll listen for sure.
A podcast seems like a good alternative. Wonderful to hear you've found a way to keep going. Those who complain about not being able to take just the songs they want should consider all the songs on LPs which were considered "filler" at the time, but have gone on to become hits or collector's items in their own right. Just listen to the whole thing--you may actually find you like it!
And thanks Paul, for the labor of love.
glad your back mate, to quote frank black (cofederate modern country outfit: the pixies), "it's educational!"
Im sure i will keep coming here and listening to your podcasts. good luck getting started. i work at a college radio station and we have been trying to go digital for years. keep up the good work
Hey Paul,
Great solution! This is all about sharing the love for music anyway not freebies. I hope you open up new conversations with each passing podcast just like before.
One request I have is you keep the podcasts at a decent bit-rate for listening sake. I've heard some pretty crappy ones out there.
Can't wait!
Hey Paul,
I'm really looking forward to what you come up with! You are by far one of my favorite blogs and I'm so happy that you've found a way to continue. Oh- and I'll definitely post a link to the podcast when it's up.
Cheers,

I think the podcast is a great idea. I've been meaning to look into that route myself. You're the kind of guy who wants to turn people on, challenge them - not give them handouts to cherry pick! It's good for us. A well-crafted podcast is like a well-crafted mix tape for a friend. Go for it!
