Today’s entry, recorded by the generally underrated Sammi Smith in 1977, isn’t very well known, but I think it’s great. It’s got a fun attitude, proper reverence for the subject matter (and then some), good lines (“there’s times of the day when my mind is way too clear”), and even a pop-the-top sound effect at the end. In the essential book, HEARTACHE BY THE NUMBERS (The 500 Greatest Country Music Singles), Sammi Smith's version of "Help Me Make It Through The Night", comes in at Number 1.
As with most lists, placement is debatable but that's high praise for a lady that few people know anything about.

The attitude of this song reminds me of the comment to a teetoaller (I think Howard Duff says it in some Altman movie -- The Wedding? -- but it's not original with him): "You mean, when you wake up in the morning, that's the best you feel all day?"
Vaughn - Great point about the Heartaches By The Number book. Kind of a crazy choice for No. 1 country song of all time, if you ask me, but it's still a good version.
Big Steve - As far as in-print compilations go, you only have one choice. The Best of Sammi Smith. It's pretty good.
Very cool blog and I love the picture in black and white. I am a great fan of beer, being a member of one of the Beer of the month clubs but also a big fan of old folk music. I'm definitely going to enjoy the rest pf your posts.
